PhD Programme "Interdisciplinary Microplastic Sciences“ (InterMicro) – From Macromolecules to the Environment

The doctoral programme InterMicro emerged from the SFB 1357 Microplastics and is closely linked to it.
Due to the complex challenges arising from the broad topic of "microplastics", integrated research approaches are an essential part of modern scientific research. Therefore, the doctoral programme InterMicro brings together the disciplines of chemistry, physics, engineering, geosciences, mathematics and biology and provides a unique interdisciplinary educational framework.

Thus, the doctoral programme InterMicro offers a broad interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary education and the promotion of interdisciplinary competences.

In relation to plastics, for example, the mechanisms and processes that act in different environmental media are just as great a challenge as the risk assessment of particles that are produced. For the development of societal and technical solutions, the effects on the environment, organisms and human health must therefore be considered in addition to economic and technical possibilities. All this must be done in the context of a society and nature undergoing global change.

The PhD programme "Interdisciplinary Microplastic Sciences (InterMicro)" - From Macromolecules to the Environment trains a new generation of young women scientists who are not only able to conduct independent research, but also have the ability to communicate in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary way. These skills will allow them to take up responsible positions in education, research, industry and society in times of global change.
